Orlistat is a gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor. This drug works by closing the absorption of fat from food. Orlistat is used in conjunction with calorie-lowering diet and weight treatments.
Indications:
To treat obesity in people with certain risk factors (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or triglycerides).
Dosage:
120 mg by mouth (orally), 3 times a day
Implementation:
Give immediately before, during or up to 1 hour after meals.
If meals missed or contains no fat, the dose of orlistat should be skipped.
Side Effects:
Adverse effects usually appear at the beginning of treatment and diminished with continued use, especially if the dietary recommendations are followed.
GI effects (visible oily from rectum, flatulence, fecal urgency, emptying of oil, increased defecation and fecal incontinence)
Special Instructions:
If the patient does not lose 5% body weight after 12 weeks of therapy, discontinue treatment.
Use of multivitamins can be recommended to patients to avoid loss of soluble vitamins in fat. (Must be taken at least 2 hours after taking orlistat or at bedtime)
Berkontraindikasi in patients with malabsorption syndrome or cholestasis.
