Acarbose is a glucosidase inhibitor. Acarbose works by slowing down the enzyme that turns the carbohydrates into glucose. It lowers blood sugar levels.Acarbose is sometimes used in conjunction with other diabetes drugs are taken orally (by mouth).
Indications:
To treat diabetes type 2 (non insulin-dependent).
Dosage:
Initial dose: 50 mg by mouth (orally), 3 times daily with food.
Increase dose with a distance of 4-8 weeks, as needed.
Maintenance Dose: 100 mg by mouth (orally), 3 times daily with food.
Maximum dose: 200 mg by mouth (orally), 3 times daily with food.
Implementation:
Give the dose to start eating first.
Side Effects:
GI effects such as flatulence, swelling. Hepatotoxicity may occur with Acarbose.
Might give impetus to the emergence of adverse GI reactions.
Special Instructions:
Should be avoided in patients with GI disorders.
