Methyldopa

Methyldopa is the drug type of alpha-2 receptor agonist. Methyldopa lowers blood pressure by reducing the levels of certain chemicals in the blood. This makes theblood vessels (veins and arteries) become weak and the heart beats more slowly andeasily. 

Indications:

To treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Dosage:

Initial dose: 250 mg by mouth (orally), 2-3 times daily.

May increase or decrease the dose no more frequently than the distance of 2 days,until the desired effect is achieved.

Maximum dose: 3 g / day

Side Effects:

Most side effects are temporary or can be changed.

CNS effects (state of drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, weakness,fatigue, impotence, sleep disturbances, paraesthesia, depression, etc.); Effects of CV (postural hypotension, fluid retention, edema and can cause angina); GI Effects (N/ V, diarrhea, constipation, pancreatitis is rare, colitis, or sores on the tongue);Securities haematological (thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, hemolyticanemia, andgranulocytopenia has occurred); hypersensitivity reactions.

Special Instructions:

Avoid in patients with liver disease or depression.

Use with caution in patients with impaired kidney or liver function, patients who have ahistory of hemolytic anemia, liver disease or depression and patients withparkinsonism.

Nertahap CBC should be measured during the first 6-12 weeks of therapy or whenpatients develop unexplained fever causes.
