Vancomycin

Vancomycin is an antibiotic. Vancomycin against susceptible bacteria in the body that cause serious infections.

Indications:

To treat the infection causing colitis (inflammation of the colon).

Dosage:

500 mg intravenously (intra venous) given every 6 hours, or 1 g intravenously (intravenous) given every 12 hours.

The maximum dose: 2 g / day

Side Effects:

Syndrome ”red neck”which is usually associated with too rapid infusion: skin redness,erythema, rash on the face and upper torso, sometimes causing symptoms such ashypotension and shock also occur.

Hypersensitivity reactions (may include mild to severe hypersensitivity, such asanaphylactoid reactions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome); haematological effects haveoccurred; The effects on the kidneys (nephrotoxicity may occur particularly at high dosesor in patients with certain tendencies factors); ototoxic effects (ototoxicity more likelywith high plasma concentrations or in renal impairment, may not be changed, tinnituscan precede loss of hearing and can be used as a sign of cessation of treatment.

Special Instructions:

Avoid in patients with a history of hearing damage.

Use with caution in patients with impaired renal function and in elderly patients.

Control of serum concentration can be done to help avoid kidney toxicity and otictoxicity, monitoring CBC and renal function during treatment is recommended along with the oversight function of hearing.
